Marisa’s brother Cameron has a landscaping business called Set Roots LLC and one of his clients raises Monarch Butterflies. She grows milkweed on her property which attracts the butterflies and then she brings the milkweed inside as she finds eggs in order to protect the butterflies as they grow. Cameron knew we would love to see the butterflies and she was kind enough to let us invade her home.
They start as eggs the size of the tip of a pencil. She throws the eggs and small caterpillars in a tupperware with leaves for them to feed on.
Once they are bigger she transfers them to milkweed plants inside a screened butterfly cage. The caterpillars eat for 10 to 14 days straight.
Then they make a Chrysalis and they are in this stage for 10 to 14 days. The chrysalis is such a beautiful jasmine green with gold dots. Do you see that clear chrysalis in the middle. We were able to watch it hatch.
Here is the butterfly after it hatched. It’s wings were still wrinkled and hadn’t unfurled.
Madelyn was able to release a butterfly that was ready to go out on it’s own. What a magical experience.
